I Thought It Was Just Bad Breath…
For two years I turned my face away from my dog's breath and called it normal. Then his vet showed me what that smell actually was, and why it is the first warning sign, not the problem. Here is what I learned, and the one thing I do at dinner now.
"The breath is usually the first thing an owner notices. By the time you see anything else, it has been going on for a while." Dr. Sandoval, Waffles' vet
I called it "just dog breath" for two years
Waffles sleeps on my pillow, and every morning he wakes me up the same way: standing on my chest, panting right into my face. For two years I would turn my head and laugh it off, and when he yawned near me, I stopped breathing through my nose for a second. My daughter Kayla started calling him the garbage truck, and honestly, it fit.
But he was eight, he ate every meal, he still begged for cheese and he still did his little spin at the door. So I bought the minty chews and the mint water drops, and I told myself it was just dog breath. That is what everybody says, right?
Bad breath isn't the problem. It's the warning.
At his checkup this spring I finally mentioned the smell, almost as a joke. In six years of checkups I had never once brought it up. Dr. Sandoval, who keeps a jar of liver treats on her desk and calls every dog "my friend," didn't laugh. She lifted his lip, pulled his cheek back and showed me his back teeth. They were brown, and the gum along them was dark red.
Then she told me something nobody had ever said to me. That smell isn't food. It's sulfur gas, made by the bacteria living in the plaque on his teeth, and the worst of it hides along and under the gumline. Plaque starts on clean teeth within a day and starts turning hard in about three. "The breath is usually the first thing an owner notices," she said. "By the time you see anything else, it has been going on for a while."
The signs I'd been explaining away
On the drive home I went through the list she gave me, and I could check off almost all of it:
❌ Breath you can smell from across the room, or when he just walks by
❌ A yellow or brown line on the big back teeth
❌ Gums that look darker red along the teeth, or bleed a little on a chew
❌ Chewing on one side, or dropping bits of food
❌ Pawing at his face, or skipping the hard treats he used to love
I had a reason for every single one. If your dog has two of them, please read the rest of this.
Where it goes when nobody stops it
Under the gumline, the buildup slowly eats into the bone that holds the teeth in place, and bone does not grow back. In small dogs like Waffles the teeth are big for the jaw, so there is less bone to lose. And dogs keep eating even with severe dental pain, which is exactly why nobody notices until a tooth is loose.
Dr. Sandoval also told me that dental disease has been linked to heart, kidney and liver problems in studies of tens of thousands of dogs. Waffles needed a cleaning under anesthesia that month, and two of his back teeth came out. The bill was $1,140.
Three weeks later, the smell was back
I really thought the cleaning had fixed it. Three weeks later he stood on my chest one morning, and there it was again. Dr. Sandoval had warned me: the cleaning takes the mouth back to zero, but plaque starts again that same night, and what happens on the days in between is up to the owner.
So I tried. Waffles has a flat little face and he bites the brush, so brushing lasted five nights. He swallowed the dental chews in two bites. He sniffed the mint water and walked away from his bowl until I poured it out. Every one of them needed his cooperation, and he had made his position very clear.
Kayla kept sending me the same ad. I was sure it was a scam.
It was a green dental powder you mix into dinner, and she sent it to me three times. I rolled my eyes every time. A powder in his food, fixing his breath? I had a drawer full of things that promised that.
What finally got me was that it didn't need his permission. Waffles has never once refused dinner. So I read the label, which actually lists every amount, and looked up the main ingredient. It's a brown seaweed that researchers studied in dogs for 90 days, starting right after a professional cleaning, just like Waffles. The dogs who got it every day had about half the bad-breath gas, less plaque, less tartar and 67% less gum bleeding than dogs on a placebo. It also has decaffeinated green tea for the breath, about five times the amount in PetLab's ProBright Advanced, and it's dosed by weight, so Waffles gets one scoop.
Three weeks in, he yawned in my face and I didn't flinch
I wasn't even watching for it. One morning he did his usual chest stand and a big yawn right at my nose, and I just lay there. That night I lifted his lip, and his back teeth still looked the way they did the week of his cleaning. The smell that used to clear the room wasn't there anymore.
I texted Kayla a picture of him asleep on my pillow with one word: "fine." She knew exactly what it meant. I felt a little guilty for doubting it, and a lot guilty for the two years I called it just dog breath.
The vet for his mouth. Dinner for the days in between.
Waffles still sees Dr. Sandoval every spring, and he always will, because she is the only one who can check under his gums. But I know now that what she finds is decided on the 364 nights in between, and those nights are mine. I want his next visit to stay a checkup, not another $1,140 morning.
His cleaning cost more than the powder will cost me in years: for a little dog like him, a scoop at dinner works out to as little as 33 cents a day. If your dog's breath makes you turn your face away, please don't call it nothing, the way I did. It's the first warning sign, and it's the easiest one to answer.
